Brake Fade
Brakes work by creating friction, which generates massive amounts of heat. If the brakes get too hot, the friction material on the brake pads begins to break down and release gases. This gas creates a microscopic barrier between the pad and the rotor, drastically reducing friction. The result is brake fade: the pedal feels firm, but the car refuses to stop quickly.
Fluid Boiling
Extreme heat can also transfer to the brake fluid. If the fluid boils, it turns into a compressible gas. This causes the brake pedal to feel spongy and go all the way to the floor with little to no braking effect.
Warped Rotors
Repeated overheating and rapid cooling can cause the metal brake rotors to warp or develop hot spots. This leads to a severe vibration or pulsation in the steering wheel and brake pedal when stopping.
