The Function of the Alternator in Your Vehicle

When it comes to the health and performance of your vehicle, one of the most critical components is the alternator. While the battery gets all the glory for starting the car, the alternator does the heavy lifting while you drive.

Generating Power

The alternator converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical power. It is driven by the engine's serpentine belt. As the belt spins the alternator's pulley, it rotates a magnet inside a coil of wire, generating alternating current (AC). An internal rectifier then converts this AC into direct current (DC) to power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the battery.

Signs of Trouble

If the alternator fails, the vehicle will run entirely off the battery, which will drain quickly. Look out for warning signs like a battery light on the dash, dim headlights, or electrical accessories functioning poorly. A whining noise from the engine bay can also indicate worn alternator bearings.
